How to Perform Home Blood Glucose Self-Testing? Standard Procedures & Practical
Edit date:2026-08-28
Many people with diabetes often encounter inaccurate readings and painful blood collection when testing their blood glucose at home due to improper operation. Mastering the standard self-test procedure and using suitable monitoring equipment helps obtain reliable blood glucose data for better glycemic management.
Prepare well before testing: get your glucometer, matching test strips, single-use lancets, alcohol pads, and a notebook or mobile device for recording data. Check the expiry date of test strips and confirm they are compatible with your glucometer model. Never reuse lancets.
For the actual test, wash your hands with warm water first. This cleans your fingertips and boosts blood circulation for easier blood sampling. If you use alcohol pads for disinfection, wait until the fingertip is completely dry before pricking, as residual alcohol can skew test results. Insert the test strip into the Hailes glucometer. Once the device is ready, prick the side of your ring, middle or little finger. This area has fewer nerve endings and causes less pain than the center of the fingertip. After pricking, gently squeeze out a drop of blood and let it be absorbed naturally by the sampling area of the test strip. Do not scrape against the skin. Simply wait for the device to display the reading.
Key notes for blood sampling: Rotate pricking sites and avoid repeated pricks on the same spot. If blood volume is insufficient, let your arm hang down naturally for a while. Do not squeeze the fingertip hard, as interstitial fluid mixing with blood will dilute the sample and lead to falsely low readings. If you cannot get enough blood, use a new lancet to retest.
Once you get the reading, promptly record the date, time (specify fasting or postprandial; postprandial timing starts from the first bite of food), blood glucose value, diet and physical feelings. Complete records provide vital references for doctors during follow-up visits.
Avoid common pitfalls in daily monitoring: Store test strips sealed in a cool, dry place to prevent moisture damage. Alcohol is preferred for disinfection, as povidone-iodine interferes with test strip reactions. Lancets are for single use only. Reusing them raises infection risks, and dulled needles will cause sharper pain.
The Hailes glucometer features simple operation and stable readings, ideal for routine home monitoring. Combined with standardized blood sampling procedures, it supports accurate glucose tracking and long-term health management.
