Correct Usage of Blood Glucose Meters

Edit date:2026-07-27

A blood glucose meter is a convenient device for monitoring blood glucose levels. Proper operation helps you understand daily blood glucose variations, while improper handling may compromise the accuracy of test results. Following basic operating principles ensures reliable measurements.

Device Selection

Key points to consider when choosing a blood glucose meter:
  • Accuracy: Prioritize models with a narrow error margin. The package or user manual usually marks an error tolerance of ±15%, meaning the measured value will not deviate greatly from the true blood glucose level.
  • Ease of Operation: For the elderly or users with limited hand mobility, select models featuring a large display, few buttons and automatic test strip aspiration.
  • Test Strip Compatibility: Certain meters require matching proprietary test strips. Confirm compatibility before purchase to avoid unusable supplies.
  • Certification: Check whether the package bears the Medical Device Registration Certificate Number, which can be verified on the official website of the National Medical Products Administration (NMPA).

Pre-Use Preparation

Clean and thoroughly dry your hands before testing; residual moisture or dirt may contaminate test strips. Take out a test strip immediately after opening the vial to prevent dampness from prolonged air exposure.

When using the meter for the first time or switching to a new batch of test strips, insert the calibration chip supplied with the device or manually enter the strip code for correct identification.

Adjust the lancing depth of the lancing device according to skin thickness: Level 1–2 for children or users with thin skin, Level 3–4 for adults.

Operating Instructions

Four core steps for proper testing:
  1. Blood Sampling: Disinfect the sides of your fingertips (less painful) with an alcohol pad. Wait until the alcohol evaporate completely before lancing. Gently squeeze the fingertip to obtain a drop of blood.
  2. Sample Application: Let the blood drop naturally contact the sample area of the test strip. Do not smear or repeatedly press the strip; insufficient blood volume will trigger an error alert.
  3. Result Reading: Insert the test strip before powering on the meter, or insert it right after startup. Wait 5–10 seconds for the reading to appear.
  4. Data Recording: Note down the testing time and result after measurement. Some meters support automatic data storage or data synchronization with mobile phones.
Hainice Reminder: Please read the product instructions carefully, or purchase and use the product under the guidance of medical personnel. For contraindications and precautions, refer to the user manual.
