Blood glucose meters are precision instruments for at-home glycemic monitoring, and routine maintenance directly impacts testing accuracy and service life. Properly perform four core maintenance tasks—cleaning and disinfection, standardized storage, regular calibration, and test strip care—to effectively prevent reading deviations and extend the device’s lifespan.
Standard and thorough daily cleaning and disinfection are essential. After each use, wipe the meter with a soft dry cloth or slightly damp cotton swab, focusing on blood stains and dust in the test strip slot. Never submerge the entire device in water or use corrosive cleaners. If blood stains remain on the meter, gently wipe with an alcohol swab and wait until the alcohol fully evaporates before reuse; avoid contact between iodophor and the meter. Regularly clean dirt from the lancing device track for smooth ejection. Single-use lancets must not be reused to prevent cross-contamination.
Strictly control storage conditions for the device. Store the blood glucose meter in a dry, cool, shaded area away from bathrooms, direct intense sunlight and extreme cold, with storage humidity kept below 90%. After switching to a new batch of test strips, replacing batteries, or if the meter is dropped or knocked, verify accuracy with matched control solution. Contact after-sales service for inspection if readings deviate by more than ±15%. Seal test strips tightly against moisture; recap the bottle immediately after taking strips. Never use expired strips, and adjust meter parameters accordingly when switching to new batches.
If test readings fluctuate drastically and contradict your physical symptoms, first troubleshoot common issues including unclean hands, damp test strips or low battery power, then retest for confirmation.
